Dimensions of Queens Culture / The Personality of Queens
Resource Type: Assignment
Instructor: Claudia Brumbaugh
Title: Professor
Department: Psychology
Course: N/A
Description
- Description of the resource: This assignment will be given early in the semester, and will be due near the end of the semester, scaffolded into steps over the semester:
- Via descriptive writing, define one of five, cultural dimensions / Big 5 traits. Then, define the dimension / trait in terms of the local conditions in Queens (e.g., what it means more specifically in the context of Queens).* You can pick the level of analysis for “Queens”. It could be QC, or neighborhood, or the entire borough. Next, place your level of Queens analysis into historical context, describing past movements/events, and describing current environmental conditions of Queens.
- Via scientific writing, identify whether the cultural dimension / Big 5 traits is low-average-high in Queens. Determine the degree either quantitatively (via self report questionnaire) or qualitatively (via interview methods).
- Explain the cultural dimension / Big 5 trait by taking into account historical factors and/or current conditions in Queens. Use theory-based post-hoc reasoning creatively to logically explain the levels you observed.
- Come together in groups to present the final outcome to the class as a group (each group will be 4-5 students who all worked on the same cultural dimension / Big 5 trait). Give feedback to your classmates after the presentations.*In Personality Psychology, I would ask that they have a section considering a trait dimension that is missed by the Big 5, that is particular to Queens.
- Where to use this resource:
- Either in my social or personality psychology class
- Goals and/or learning outcomes:
- Goals: To consider how Queens as a place affects the culture / personality of those who reside there. Locally applying the principles we learn in class. Applying principles of environmental interactions.
- Learning outcomes: Upon completion of this activity, students will be able to collect and interpret data using statistical and/or qualitative methods to draw conclusions on how the environment of Queens affects culture / personality and understand environmental interactions. They will also have a better understanding of cultural and regional differences.
- How this project/resource engages Queens/place:
- examining cultural dimensions / Big 5 traits in Queens. Possibly getting input from elderly residents of Pomonok Houses for qualitative approaches.
